Piles (Haemorrhoids)

Piles cause pain, itching and bleeding while passing stool. Ayurveda focuses on digestion and constipation, the main root of the problem.

Overview

What is piles?

Piles, or haemorrhoids, are swollen veins in and around the anus. They can be inside the anal canal or come out through the anus.

Piles are often linked to long-term constipation and hard stools. They can be dry or bleeding. Internal piles tend to bleed more than external ones.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda sees weak digestive fire and toxins (ama) disturbing pitta and vata. Aggravated vata causes the swelling, and aggravated pitta causes more bleeding.

Long-term constipation, straining and weak digestion.

Lifestyle

Sitting for long hours, a sedentary routine and holding back natural urges.

Diet

Home remedies

From the family kitchen

01

Sesame oil for dry piles

For external, dry piles, apply a little sesame oil on the area and follow with a warm, moist compress.

02

Warm sitz bath

Sit in a tub of warm water with the buttocks covered for a few minutes.

Use these only for external piles; if there is bleeding, severe pain or you are pregnant, see Dr. Varun or your doctor first.
