Menstrual Problems

Heavy, painful, delayed or irregular periods can drain your energy. Ayurveda looks at digestion, diet and stress to support a healthier cycle.

Overview

What is menstrual problems?

Menstrual problems is a broad term for disorders of the monthly cycle. These include delayed or missed periods, very heavy bleeding, long periods and painful cramps.

Heavy bleeding over many months can lead to anaemia. That is why it is important to get it checked and not ignore it.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda links these problems to weak digestion and poor diet. Toxins build up and block the channels, which disturbs vata dosha and rakta (blood).

Causes

What commonly triggers it

Diet

Too much sour, salty, spicy, heavy, fermented or fatty food, and alcohol.

Eating habits

Eating again before the last meal is digested, and frequent indigestion.

Physical strain

Heavy exertion, day sleeping, weakness, injury or repeated abortions.

Emotional stress

Grief, anger and anxiety can upset the cycle.
