Headache (Shirashool)

A headache is a sign, not a disease. Ayurvedic care looks for the cause behind it, not just the pain.

Overview

What is headache?

Headache can come from poor sleep, high blood pressure, sinus trouble, weak eyesight, anaemia, hunger, poor lighting, loud music, overwork, stress, gas or constipation.

In Ayurveda it is called Shirashool. It may come with watery eyes, giddiness or a nosebleed.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda links headache to Vata blocked by Kapha in the head, with a sensitive nervous system and weak digestion. Herbal care aims to balance the doshas and restore digestion.

01

Sandalwood paste

For a burning headache, mix sandalwood powder or clean clay with rose water and apply on the forehead.

For headache from blocked sinuses, add a little vinegar to hot water and inhale the steam.

Keep your eyes closed during steam and keep children away from hot water; frequent or worsening headaches need a check-up.
