Diabetes (Madhumeha)

Diabetes is a lifelong condition. Ayurvedic care can support diet, lifestyle and overall health, alongside your doctor's treatment.

Overview

What is diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus is a long-term condition where the body cannot use glucose properly. Blood sugar stays high. Sugar then passes into the urine, so you urinate more and feel thirsty.

Left uncontrolled, it can damage the eyes, heart, kidneys and feet. Regular checks and steady care matter.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda does not look only at sugar numbers. It aims to strengthen the whole body and help prevent complications through lifestyle change, diet and herbs, alongside your doctor's treatment.

Diet & lifestyle

Small changes that help

Best avoided

  • Sugar and refined carbohydrates
  • Fried food and cream
  • Sweet fruits like grapes, mango and pineapple
  • Overeating
  • Sleeping during the day

Helpful habits

  • Whole grains: whole wheat, brown rice
  • Karela, garlic, onion, spinach, jamun, raw banana
  • Roti from 1 part barley, 1 part black chana and 4 parts whole wheat flour
  • Yoghurt or paneer from skimmed milk

Home remedies

From the family kitchen

01

Karela (bitter gourd)

Take 2 teaspoons of karela juice once a day, or eat more karela as a cooked vegetable.

02

Methi (fenugreek) powder

Take 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seed powder with water twice a day.

These can lower blood sugar further with your medicines, so check your sugar regularly, tell your doctor, and never stop or change prescribed medicine on your own.
