Burning in the chest that keeps coming back? Dr. Varun Dogra's Ayurvedic care looks at your diet, routine and digestion together.
Overview
Acid reflux, or GERD, happens when the valve between the food pipe and the stomach becomes weak. Instead of shutting tight after food passes, it stays open, so stomach acid flows back up.
Heartburn more than twice a week that does not settle with antacids may be a sign of GERD.
The Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda links acid reflux to excess heat (Pitta). Heat toxins rise into the food pipe and cause burning, so care aims to calm this heat.
Causes
Too much tea, coffee, oily, spicy and fried food.
Late-night work and irregular meals.
Alcohol and fizzy drinks.
Frequent painkillers or antibiotics, and an aggressive, hyperactive nature.
Symptoms
Do not wait, get urgent medical help if you have
Ayurvedic approach
Dr. Varun listens to your symptoms, history, food habits and routine, and looks at any reports or medicines you already take.
Nadi pariksha (pulse) and Prakriti (body type) assessment help him understand your individual balance.
Where suitable, a personal plan may combine diet and routine changes, classical Ayurvedic medicines and, for some people, Panchakarma.
Progress is reviewed and the plan adjusted, at the clinic or on WhatsApp.
Diet & lifestyle
Home remedies
Mix powdered fennel, basil leaves, licorice root and coriander seeds. Take half a teaspoon with half a teaspoon of mishri (rock sugar) powder, 15 minutes before lunch and dinner.
Add powdered mishri, fennel and green cardamom to a glass of cold milk.
Licorice can raise blood pressure and mishri is sugar, so people with high BP or diabetes, and pregnant women, should ask Dr. Varun first.
