Chronic Rhinitis

Chronic rhinitis means a nose that stays irritated for weeks. Ayurvedic care may help reduce flare-ups and support easier breathing.

Overview

What is chronic rhinitis?

Rhinitis is inflammation or irritation inside the nose. It is called chronic when it lasts more than four days a week, or for four weeks or longer.

Sneezing, a blocked nose, a runny nose and itching are common. When these keep returning, the problem can settle in. Repeated colds are the most common trigger.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda sees it as an imbalance of Kapha (mucus) and Pitta (heat). Toxins from this imbalance collect in the respiratory system, so care aims to calm both doshas.

Causes

What commonly triggers it

Repeated colds

Frequent colds are the most common trigger.

Ongoing nose irritation

Constant sneezing, blockage, runny or itchy nose can turn long-term.

Kapha-Pitta food

Oily, fried, sour, very sweet and fermented food can add to the imbalance.

Where suitable, a personal plan may combine diet and routine changes, classical Ayurvedic medicines and, for some people, Panchakarma.

  4. 4

Herbs used in Ayurveda

Dr. Varun may use herbs such as aloe vera, dalchini (cinnamon), yashtimadhu (mulethi), bibhitaki, talispatra and lavang (clove). The right form and dose is set at your consultation.

Do not self-dose these herbs; yashtimadhu (mulethi) is not suitable for people with high blood pressure, and pregnant women should consult first.
