Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever)

Sneezing fits and a runny nose every season? Dr. Varun Dogra's Ayurvedic care looks at your digestion, routine and triggers.

Overview

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is a very common allergy. The body reacts to pollen or dust, causing long bouts of sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy eyes and throat.

It often runs in families, so several members may have the same problem.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda links it to ama (toxins) and low immunity, which increase Kapha (the water element). Care aims to clear phlegm, balance the doshas and support detox.

Causes

What commonly triggers it

Dust and smoke

Breathing in dust and smoke, and poor digestion.

Wrong routine

Staying awake at night and sleeping in the day.

Cold exposure

Cold, chilly weather or not adjusting to the season.

Other factors

Holding back natural urges, and a family history of allergy.

How Dr. Varun approaches care

  1. 1

    Consultation

Dr. Varun listens to your symptoms, history, food habits and routine, and looks at any reports or medicines you already take.

  2. 2

    Assessment

Nadi pariksha (pulse) and Prakriti (body type) assessment help him understand your individual balance.

  3. 3

    Your plan

Where suitable, a personal plan may combine diet and routine changes, classical Ayurvedic medicines and, for some people, Panchakarma.

  4. 4

    Follow-up

Progress is reviewed and the plan adjusted, at the clinic or on WhatsApp.

Diet & lifestyle

Small changes that help

Best avoided

  • Stale food and junk food
  • Kapha-increasing foods: cold, heavy and very sweet foods
  • Going out in dust or cold with the nose uncovered

Helpful habits

  • Eat only freshly cooked, warm food
  • Cover your nose in dust and cold air
  • Take steam inhalation

Home remedies

From the family kitchen

01

Herbal decoction

Boil licorice root powder, black pepper, grated ginger and basil leaves in water. Add a little sugar and sip warm.

02

Ginger turmeric milk

Add freshly grated ginger and a pinch of turmeric to warm milk.

Licorice can raise blood pressure and the decoction has sugar, so people with high BP or diabetes, and pregnant women, should ask Dr. Varun first.
